Merits of the Author

Prof. Everardo Zapata Santillana is recognized, among others, for the following merits:

  • Completed Secondary and Professional Studies at the Escuela Normal Superior "San Juan Bautista de La Salle", thanks to a scholarship awarded for his ability and dedication to study, obtaining the title of First Category Primary Teacher, 1940–1947.

  • Founder and Head Teacher of the First Grade Boys’ School No. 9638 as part of a mission of the Ministry of Education.

  • Developed teaching methodologies adapted to rural and bilingual contexts.

  • Initiated the pedagogical foundation that later gave rise to the Coquito method.

  • Author and Editor of the book Coquito, publishing its first edition as a pioneering

  • work in the initial teaching of reading in Spanish, implementing a global-synthetic approach that has been replicated in more than 15 countries.

  • Provided workshops and guidance to teachers on the implementation of the Coquito method, preparing complementary guides and support materials for classroom use.

  • Provided advice for adapting Coquito to diverse linguistic and cultural contexts, coordinating with international publishers for its distribution in more than 15 countries.

  • Published new versions of the method: Coquito Escritura, Coquito Matemática, Coquito para Adultos, among others. Updated content and graphic design to keep the book current alongside new pedagogical methods.

  • Awarded the Palmas Magisteriales in the Grade of Educator – 1981.

  • Awarded the Palmas Magisteriales in the Grade of Amauta – 2004.

  • Named Honorary Professor by the Catholic University of Santa María – 1992.

  • Received the Gold Medal from the Regional Directorate of Arequipa – 1994.

  • Received the Diploma of Honor for his contribution to education, granted by the National Institute of Culture (now the Ministry of Culture) – 2005.

  • Awarded the José Antonio Encinas Medal, Derrama Magisterial – 2008.

  • Declared Distinguished Son of Arequipa by the Provincial Municipality of Arequipa – 2008.

  • Received the Gold Medal, Officer Rank, from the Congress of the Republic of Peru – 2011.

  • Declared Cultural Heritage of the City of Arequipa by the Provincial Municipality of Arequipa – 2011.

  • Received the Diploma and Medal of La Libertad from the Regional Government of La Libertad – 2012.

  • Declared Illustrious Son by the District Municipality of Cocachacra, Islay, Arequipa – 2012.

  • Received the Gold Medal from the Regional Directorate of Arequipa – 2013.

  • Awarded a Diploma by the Regional Education Office, Regional Government of Arequipa – 2015.

  • Received a Diploma from the Lauretana Academy of Sciences and Arts of Arequipa – 2015.

  • Received a Diploma of Honor and Gold Medal of the Arequipa Region from the Regional Government of Arequipa – 2016.

  • Awarded the Citizen Merit Medal by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers – 2016.

  • Honored with a bust by the Regional Association of Retired Teachers of Arequipa (ARECA) – 2019.

  • Tribute to Professor Everardo Zapata Santillana by the Library of the Ministry of Culture, Lima – September 5, 2022.

  • Recipient of the National Award “Admiral Miguel Grau Loyalty” – 2020.

  • Named Arequipeño of the Bicentennial by the Provincial Municipality of Arequipa – 2021.

  • Tribute to Professor Everardo Zapata Santillana by the Library of the Ministry of Culture, Lima – September 5, 2022.

  • Awarded the title Great Master of the Bicentennial, recognized as a Meritorious Educational Personality by the Congress of the Republic, Lima – September 21, 2022.

  • Recognition for his contribution to Peruvian Education, granted by Educación Fest, sponsored by the Embassy of the United States, Arequipa – 2022.

  • Declaration of the first edition of the book Coquito (January 1955) as National Cultural Heritage – 2025.

  • Awarded the Extraordinary Academic Degree of “Doctor Honoris Causa” by the Catholic University of Santa María – 2025.
